Strengthening the Bonds between Farm, Food and Health in Local, Regional and National Economies
Food is health. With enough good food, we can improve the health of communities … grow economies … alter health outcomes … change lives. We all believe it, and we live our lives in ways that support it. But to get where we want to go, it’s not going to be enough for small groups of committed individuals to want good food. If we have any hope of rewriting our national health story, we must strengthen the bonds that already exist between farm, food and health, increasing systemic demand for good food.
To launch the dialogue on how to explore these connections and create new forms of demand for good food in local, regional and national economies, we are pleased to announce the first annual Good Food Good Futures Conference. Sponsored by Wallace Center’s National Good Food Network and the Good Food Good Futures Institute, the event will take place March 2-3, at the American Royal complex in Kansas City’s historic Stockyards District.
At the first ever Farm, Food and Health conference, a diverse group of stakeholders will come together to discuss the biologic and economic relationships between food and health. Together they will explore how to systematize the demand for good food in local, regional and national food economies. Experts from the agricultural, food retailing, information technology, large employer, government and healthcare sectors will share their knowledge about how to develop practical solutions to problems in our local and global food systems. Only with healthy food that is affordable and accessible can we achieve the long-term goal to positively impact our health as a population.
Good Food Good Futures is an initiative of the American Royal Association, a 110-year-old civic organization focused on promoting American agricultural education and agrarian values. The members of Good Food Good Futures are an alliance of Kansas City-based farmers, food retailers, healthcare and information technology professionals, educators, civic leaders, employers and entrepreneurs.
Through detailed working sessions, provocative discussions and exercises, conference participants will tackle topics such as:
- Regional food systems
- Smart agricultural practices that facilitate community-wide health
- What causes large employers to change the eating habits of their employees
- How the U.S. government views the long-term economic impact of an unhealthy diet
- Social justice, food and health
- How to achieve local success in a global marketplace
- Creating the good food economy
Who Should Attend
Food system and healthcare professionals, policymakers, planners, researchers, county extension and other educators, food businesses, agricultural organizations, healthcare organizations, consumer groups and students.
