Champion market animals sell at American Royal Junior Premium Livestock Auction

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—More than $275,000 was raised for youth at the 2011 American Royal Premium Livestock Auction on Sunday, Oct. 23. This year’s auction has a total of 63 head including 22 steers, 25 hogs, 14 lambs, and 2 goats. A total of 790 junior market animals were shown in the market animal events at the American Royal by 486 exhibitors from 22 different states. The winners of these events then had the opportunity to sell their animals at the auction.

The Grand Champion Market Steer was owned by Elizabeth Jones of Williamsburg, Iowa, and sold for $60,000 to Hugh Andrews, Herb Buchbinder, David Fowler, Steve Frye, David Frye, KPMG LLP, John Lathrop, Brant Laue, Greg Maday, Ellen Merriman, and Tyler Nottberg. The Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer was shown by Sarah Ayer of Calhoun, Ken., and sold for $27,500. Sarah’s steer was bought by Lockton Companies.

Jake Keppy of Durant, Iowa, exhibited the Grand Champion Market Hog, which sold for $20,000 to AFA, Harry Cleberg, Russell Stover and UMB. Saddle & Sirloin purchased the Reserve Grand Champion Market Hog for $11,000, which was owned by Dan Newnum of Kingman, Ind.

The Grand Champion Market Lamb sold for $10,000 to Bryan and Nancy Beaver and Bert & Stacy Macy and was exhibited by MacKenzie Fruchey of Fayette, Ohio. Jeanne Patterson and Jeff Roe purchased the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb for $9,500 from Samantha Raute of Carmel, Ind.

Madison Belcher of Texico, N.M., owned the Grand Champion Market Goat which sold to CarterEnergy, Bryan and Nancy Beaver for $5,500. Lee and Ellen Baty bought the Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat from Sierra Martin of Mason, Texas, for $6,000.

Doak Lambert served as the auctioneer for the event. The sale was chaired by Ron and Kelly Lockton.

The American Royal, Kansas City’s longest running show, has been a Kansas City tradition since 1899.
