(Kansas City, MO) – The American Royal’s signature World Series of Barbecue® event weekend, wrapping up today with the Barbecue Open Championship awards ceremony, has made history by setting the world record for the world’s largest barbecue event and debuting the Barbecue Hall of Fame.
This year, the American Royal officially became the home of the Barbecue Hall of FameSM. The World Series of Barbecue event weekend included the first induction ceremony for the Barbecue Hall of Fame inductees. The Midwest Ford Dealers presented the 2012 BarbecueHall of Fame and welcomed the following inductees:
GuyFieri – host of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network (Celebrity/Humanitarian Category)
JohnnyTrigg – known as the “Godfather of Barbecue” and one of the featured personalities onTLC’s hit barbecue show the BBQ Pitmasters (PitmasterCategory)
HenryFord – manufacturer of the charcoal briquette that ultimately became Kingsford Charcoal Company(Business/Industry Category)
Kansas City welcomeda record-breaking 545 professional barbecue teams of pitmasters and master grillers from around the world to compete at the American Royal 33rdAnnual World Series of Barbecue® championship contests from October 4-7. The prominent “must attend” event is the largest barbecue contest in the world, spreading over 20 acres with barbecue teams competing for top barbecue championship titles and prizes in Kansas City’s historic West Bottoms district – the same grounds of the historic stockyards and railways of the American livestock industry for over a century.
The World Series of Barbecue, presented by UMB, is a “must attend” event for competitive pitmasters and backyard barbecue enthusiasts alike. The competition is intense – many of the top-ranked BBQ teams compete in the American Royal’s Oklahoma Joe’s Open and KC Masterpiece Invitational barbecue contests, which are considered the season finale for teams in the competitive barbecue circuit.
This year,Destination American returned to the American Royal to film an episode for thehit TV show “BBQ Pitmasters” featuring some ofthe world’s best in barbecue competing at the prestigious American Royal contest. The barbecue event also includes livemusic and entertainment with headliners including American Idol’s “Sweetheart” Lauren Alaina and bands playingfor various parties throughout the festival, cooking demonstrations by renowned culinary experts, chefs, and famous pitmasters, a Kids Korral featuring mutton bustin’, stick horse races, and petting zoo with exotic animals, and a weekend full of family-friendly activities and interactive entertainment.
Combine these with a barbecue-related trade expo with over 60 vendors including a fresh produce store hosted by Price Chopper, grilling displays, barbecue and culinary tools and accessories, and a temporary on-site Sam’s Club store for barbecuers, and this popular four-day celebration of food, fun, and all things barbecue earns its title as the World Series of Barbecue®!
The American Royal Association and Harvesters — The Community Food Network continued a 15-year tradition of partnering to collect and distribute several thousand pounds of competition-quality barbecued meats to help feed the hungry in the Kansas City area. During the four-day weekend, Harvesters collected 5,265 pounds of food, including 2,195 pounds of competition-quality barbecue meats. The non-profit food bank also received several cash donations from competitors and participants in the World Series of Barbecue championship contests.
The World Series ofBarbecue is one of the most popular and highly attended events on the professional barbecue competition circuit. In 2012, the World Series of Barbecue was dubbed the “world’s largest and most famous barbecue contest” by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine. It is organized and hosted by the American Royal Association, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting youth and education. The multi-month season of American Royal’s 2012 events was presented by Bayer Health Care Animal Health Division. In 2011, the American Royal Association contributed $1.4 million in scholarship and educational awards through funds raised by endowments, contributions, sponsorships and revenues gained through events such as the World Series of Barbecue®.
